Gorgon Lino Print

In Ancient Greek mythology, the gorgon sisters Euryale, Stheno, and Medusa were monsters whose terrible gaze could turn men to stone. While Euryale and Stheno were immortal, Medusa was slain by the hero Perseus, and her decapitated head was eventually added to Athena’s famous shield. The iconography of gorgons and their heads (also called gorgoneia) were popular subjects in Greek and Roman art, and I’m quite taken with how monstrous these ancient portrayals got to be.

These lino prints are all from a hand-carved block and are hand-pulled individually, so there are slight differences between every print. Each print is numbered 1-5. This run of five all have hand-painted golden eyes and are printed on 9×12″ paper.
