Death to the King (Aitvaras and Basilisk) Print
Two years ago I did a big painting of an Aitvaras, a creature from Lithuanian mythology, locked in combat with a basilisk: and while I love the painting dearly, I wanted a smaller print version as well! The Aitvaras is a household spirit that appears as a dragon or a black rooster with a flaming tail, and, like the basilisk, has unnatural barnyard origins. While the basilisk is the king of serpents, a creature propelled by hatred of all life, the Aitvaras is a humble household servant, driven to steal tidbits from the neighbors in hopes of pleasing its master’s family.
